Career Tools on Job Boards

As hiring slips away from the job boards to LinkedIn, niche job sites, social media, company web sites (direct and via the job seach engines), the job boards are continuing to move into content, adding tools, and expanding resources,  to help job seekers determine career paths and job options, and to cement their user base.

Both Monster and CareerBuilder have added new tool sets, while other sites are refocusing and redesigning to stay competitive in a tough market.  That said, there’s competition in the career advice category, too,  from niche sites like Path101, WetFeet (which has been redesigned), Career Key, and the other sites that help job seekers determine a career path.

CareerBuilder Job Discovery Wizard
The Job Discovery Wizard on CareerPath.com allows job seekers to explore new areas of employment based on the strength of their current skills and education. Job seekers start by selecting their current strengths from two wide ranging lists; one on skills categories that includes selections such as writing or critical thinking, and one on knowledge categories, with entries such as chemistry and psychology.  From there, job seekers rate their proficiencies on each skill and knowledge selection. With the push of a button, a detailed list of jobs that match those criteria is generated.

Monster Career Tools
Monster’s Career Tools provides job seekers with tools to  research, compare, and explore careers. Research occupations using Career Snapshots, see how you compare with Career Benchmarking, and explore career paths using Career Mapping.

Vault
Vault has always been more than a job board, with a focus on company and industry information, but this summer’s redesign offers “a more relevant, contextual experience, which is designed to be responsive to the job seeker.”   “My Vault,” provides a customizable career management portal, where users can access the latest information about their personalized list of target companies, industries and professions.
